Types of Head Injuries

Head injuries are classified generally as either open head injuries or closed head injuries. Open head injuries, sometimes called penetrating head injuries, involve a fracture or penetration of the skull. Closed head injuries do not involve a fracture or penetration of the skull. Because of the dangers of swelling around the brain, closed head injuries can be just as serious or more serious than open head injuries.

Closed Head Injuries

Closed head injuries can cause serious brain damage when the brain is pushed against the skull and bruised. Although there may be no visible damage, internal damage can cause bleeding inside the skull, and cause irreversible brain damage or even death. This type of closed head injury is often referred to as a traumatic brain injury.

Open Head Injuries

Open head injuries frequently require surgery to repair the damage to the victim’s cranium (skull), or when the victim’s skull is fractured into many pieces, to remove bits of skull pushed inside the brain. Open head injuries have visible damage, and are more likely to damage a specific area of the brain.  With an open head injury, there is always the concern of a possible infection. There are two types of open head injuries: penetrating injuries and skull fractures.

Causes of Head Injuries

Head injuries can be caused by serious traffic accidents, including motor vehicle accidents, bicycle accidents, motorcycle accidents, truck accidents, and pedestrian accidents.  Head injuries can also be caused by industrial and construction accidents, slip and fall accidents, sports accidents, and violent assaults.  Non-traumatic brain injuries, called anoxic brain injuries, can also be caused by near drowning, heart attacks, and infections.
